There are so many unique flavors and tastes that you can only find here. From the epic Tex-Mex to a perfect Texas BBQ there’s nothing quite like my home state!
The problem is, it gets messy.
Now, I know this happens no matter what you’re cooking. Ingredients end up all over the kitchen, but BBQ, to me gets everywhere in a way other foods don’t. It makes things sticky, it stains, and drips all over the place. But it’s worth every mess, even when you really have to scrub to get it off counters, chairs and tables!
One tasty lunch we love, is a Texas BBQ Chicken Sandwich. Even though we might be known for our pulled pork, my kids prefer chicken, so that’s what we went with today. This is also SUCH a quick recipe to pull together, it works for a quick dinner after school, or a filling lunch for the weekends.
What you need:
- 2 Pretzel Buns
- 1 cup Texas BBQ sauce
- 10 Chicken nuggets (can get frozen or make your own)
- Either 1,000 paper towels or just one Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloth from Kroger
To start, toast the pretzel buns in the oven for a few seconds. This will give them that warm, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside tastiness!
The easiest way to do this is to slice the buns in half and place them face-up on a cookie sheet. Preheat the broiler on your oven and then place the cookie sheet of buns inside. Let cook 30 seconds and then take them out! This will ensure they outside is crunchier while the inside is soft and warm.
If you are making your own chicken bites, use this recipe. It’s SO flavorful, you won’t regret it!
Otherwise, heat up the chicken nuggets you have, and mix with warm BBQ sauce. We’ve found 5 nuggets per sandwich is about the right ratio, and half a cup of BBQ sauce typically covers them.
You can usually find an amazing Texas BBQ sauce in stores. You’ll find that Texas BBQ sauce is thick and has more of a brown sugar flavor while BBQ sauce from the Carolinas is thinner, with a more vinegar taste.
Inevitably, you’ll spill some sauce. Be it from the mixing, putting the chicken and bread together or from simply eating a tasty BBQ sandwich. It’s just impossible to eat BBQ without making a mess!
That’s why I listed Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloth as one of the must-haves when making Texas BBQ. What would normally taking elbow grease and lots of scrubbing back and forth, can now be done with a simple swipe.
That’s because Scotch-Brite® Dish Cloths have scrubbers on them. This means, without scratching anything they can clean up even the toughest of messes you might make in the kitchen! It’s reusable and washable, so it keeps you from wasting dozens of paper towels on a Texas-sized mess!
The dish cloths are available in 2 packs in grey, mint, tan, and navy for at Kroger for $2.99 for a 1-pack and $5.49 for the 2-pack. I loved all the colors to choose from in the store!
Right now, it’s $1 off a 1 pack and $1.50 off a 2 pack of the Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloths available in store on clips strips with the product display.
I was able to grab the dish cloths with other cleaning supplies in Kroger, and I’m so glad I did! Between cleaning up after my kids and after our favorite messy BBQ meals, I needed something to help me do a better, faster job of it and this fit the bill to help me power through more messes! I used to have to scratch at things with my nails or the back of a spoon, which always ends up leaving little scratches on my surfaces, no matter how hard I try to not let it! Thankfully, that won’t be an issue anymore and we can enjoy our BBQ without fear!
My engineer-minded husband recently took over the bulk of the kitchen management from me, and he’s revolutionized the way it’s run! He’s been sharing with our friends and they’ve been loving hearing how differently he runs it and how much it helps all of us!
#1 – Keep your work space clean. I always let dishes pile up in the sink, thinking that keeping my counter space clear was the top priority. My husband on the other hand, doesn’t let a single dish rest in the sink.
This does three things, it ensures that we remember to do the dishes because they can’t hide in the sink, it also makes it easier to wash them when the time comes, because the sink is always available when it comes time to wash dishes and things don’t have to be shuffled around first. It also leaves the sink useable for other everyday uses between bouts of dish-washing.
#2 – Don’t buy more than you need. Another way he’s been keeping our kitchen tidier is by only purchasing what we need at the store, and nothing extra.
He doesn’t buy bulk, he just buys what he needs for the next day or two. This means, no extra boxes of food piling up everywhere or going to waste. It also means our cupboards stay reasonably stocked but not so much that there’s no space to move things around.
#3 – Keep some things out – Our kids are small, and they LOVE being able to do things on their own. This means that, leaving a few things out on the counter easily accessible to them is a way to avoid messes in the kitchen. Cereal stays out where they can reach in the mornings, and healthy snacks stay within reach as well. This keeps them from climbing around unsafely or pulling all sorts of things from cupboards looking for what they want. Strategic placement of kid food on countertops in an orderly way means less stress and fewer messes to clean up!
